What FileMaker can do today
Claris FileMaker (since 2019 under the umbrella of Claris International Inc., an Apple subsidiary) is a low-code platform on which companies can develop custom database solutions, forms, reports and automated workflows – without learning classic programming languages. What makes it special: FileMaker runs natively on macOS, iOS, iPadOS and Windows, and with FileMaker WebDirect it also enables browser access without installing an app.
Since 2024/2025, Claris has integrated significant AI features into FileMaker: LLM connectivity (including to local models for on-premises operation), semantic search across database content and automatic text recognition. This also makes FileMaker attractive for companies that want to integrate AI functionality into their existing processes without handing their data over to external cloud services.
Who FileMaker is particularly suited to

- Apple-first companies that want native macOS/iOS integration – no other low-code tool is so deeply integrated into the Apple platform

Where FileMaker reaches its limits
- High-volume transactional databases (thousands of simultaneous write operations) – PostgreSQL, MySQL or dedicated ERP systems are the better choice here
- Teams that use Windows and Android exclusively – FileMaker is optimised for Apple environments
- Projects with a very limited budget and simple requirements – Airtable or Notion are more cost-effective for simple table structures

Conclusion: the right platform for the right task
FileMaker is not a tool for everyone – but for the tasks it is suited to, there is hardly anything better: deeply integrated, data-protection-compliant, custom-developed business applications on the Windows and Apple platforms. If you need simple tables, Airtable will serve you better. If you need an individual, complex workflow that runs reliably for years – on Apple as well as on Windows – there is hardly any way around FileMaker.
